On February 11, the International Day of Women and Girls in Science was celebrated. In Spain, 12.44% of female students select a STEM career compared to 37.34% of male students. This gap is also reflected in the professional context; The percentage of women in engineering jobs is 12% in Spain, compared to a world average of 15%. In addition, they face various problems such as the lack of female principal investigators in research projects or the glass ceiling.
From the different computer societies that the SCIE brings together, various activities are carried out to increase the presence of women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers. For example, the “Engendering Technologies” workshop organized by AIPO since 2014, the French Allen award from the AEPIA for doctoral theses written by women, the WSARTECO” meetings of SARTECO or the DiverTLes initiative (Diversity in Language Technologies in Spain) of the SEPLN.
The Women in Informatics Commission is in charge of analyzing the current situation of women in computer engineering and the different actions that are developed to reduce the gender gap, such as the WOMEN@INF project.
